On Juneteenth

Happy Juneteenth! This weekend we celebrate the date June 19, 1865 when federal soldiers arrived in Galveston to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation issued more than two years prior.

Ironically, here in Texas where slavery ended, we endure more than our share of that which still holds us in bondage. Even with the abolition of slavery, many of us remain far from free.

Not yet free from racism and other bigotries, gun violence, voter suppression, infringements on a woman’s right to control her own body, systemic economic oppression, and crimes against our natural environment. Though these realities disproportionately affect people of color, none of us are fully free, for, as Dr. King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Our country’s promise has always been great, so we continue the pursuit of “liberty and justice for all.” That starts in our own back yard, where I am running as the Democratic candidate in House District 132.

My platform – educational opportunity via STEM 2.0, economic uplift through Business Innovation Grants, and advocating for access – provides steps in the right direction. As you celebrate Juneteenth, I hope you will consider taking those steps with me.
